Our Analysis

Vitamin D is essential for proper infant growth and development and unfortunately, breastmilk doesn't contain enough. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that exclusively or partially breastfed receiving less than 32 ounces of Vitamin D-fortified formula a day should receive 400 IU (International Units) of Vitamin D every day.

Low blood levels of Vitamin D can cause Vitamin D-deficiency rickets, a softening of the bones and growth plates, represented by classic leg bowing seen in affected children. Infants tend to have less direct exposure to sunlight with use of coverings and sunscreen and thus tend to produce insufficient Vitamin D on their own. Exclusively breastfeeding infants, infants with dark skin, and/or those living in northern latitudes are at particular risk for rickets and benefit greatly by receiving a supplement nutritionally.

Baby Ddrops do not contain artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives. Pure Vitamin D3 is naturally sourced lanolin from sheep's wool in a medium of purified coconut oil without chemicals or additives. Tasteless and odorless, it is free of wheat, gluten, soy, corn, sugar, milk, and peanut and is suitable for lacto-ovo vegetarians.

Ddrops can be placed on mother's nipple, a bottle nipple, a pacifier, sippy cup mouth piece, or clean finger via its Eurodropper mechanism. Turned upside down, it releases exactly one drop (400 IU in 0.028mL). Once one drop comes out, tilting the bottle at a 45 degree angle will prevent another drop from coming out.

Baby Ddrop's brochure highlights the benefits of Baby Ddrops compared to other commonly recommended versions in addition to instructions for use. Their Baby Ddrops webpage also includes other helpful information.

Safety Tip — As Vitamin D is fat soluble and can be toxic in sustained large doses, we highly recommend double and triple checking the dosage per volume for whatever brand of Vitamin D you are using to ensure that baby is only receiving 400 IU a day. Enfamil brand's D-Vi-Sol, Tri-Vi-Sol, and Poly-Vi-Sol all contain 400 IU in 1 mL but Baby Ddrops has the same amount in just 1 drop (0.028 mL). Therefore, it is important to make sure that your baby is not receiving too much.

Likes

The most commonly cited likes for this product are:

  • Easy to use
  • Only one drop is needed per day
  • Very good value

Dislikes

User reviews frequently note these disadvantages:

  • Only a 90 day supply (In our opinion, this is actually an advantage as the bottle's smaller volume size helps make overdosing less likely.)
