Storchenwiege Woven Wrap Review
The Skinny
Our Analysis and Test Results
Storchenwiege is a German-born company launched after the inspiration of a Textile Engineer wanting a better carrier for his new granddaughter. The new grandfather went on to improve his original invention by making it easier to tie, ergonomically correct for babies and more comfortable for parents. The company is now run by his two daughters who continue the legacy of their father.
Performance Comparison
Baby's Comfort
The Storchenwiege is slightly above average and not terrible for the baby's comfort, but it is lower than comfort for most of the competing wraps.
There are multiple positions little ones can sit in, and some seemed cozier than others. We suspect the lack of stretchability impact comfort and is why little ones appear more comfortable in the competition.
Parent's Comfort
The Storchenwiege is about average for parent comfort, which means for some testers it was fine and if they'd never tried another carrier, they may not known other options were more comfortable. The variety of fold and wrap options for this carrier means most parents will be able to find a wrap they like that feels like they can wear it for longer adventures. Testers like that the fabric can be pulled wide to cover more surface area, so less pressure rests on a small area. On the downside, this much fabric, the thickness of the material, and the layering of the wrap for certain holds mean you can get overheated depending on the weather.
Ease of Use
We had real difficulty using the wrap. The manual has a lot of instructions for a variety of different wraps and holds. It is a little confusing and more involved than most of the other wraps we tested.
Putting the carrier on and getting the baby in is similar to the stretchy wraps but you have to put your baby in before you can tie it off because there is no give to the material. The lack of flex makes it harder to manage and means a greater potential for error. Once you get baby inside you'll need to go back then and make further adjustments to the fabric and shift the baby around to get a good fit and a comfortable hold. It isn't necessarily difficult, but it is more convoluted and involved than the ring slings and soft structured carriers that don't require all the wrapping, twisting and tying. The Baby K'tan Original is a wrap style without all the wrapping making it significantly easier to use if what you desire is a wrap.
Ease of Cleaning
The Storchenwiege can be machine washed on hot, but it needs to be hanged to dry, which can take a while depending on your climate. It is easier to spot clean on the go, however, which is a real plus if baby spits up or you spill something on the fabric.
